South Korea and Japan Deepen Integration Into Europe’s Defense Processes in Support of U.S. Objectives

From June 10 to June 18, 2026, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung carried out his first European tour after t, followed by the Vatican and France, including talks with the leadership of the European Union in Brussels at the 11th EU–Republic of Korea Summit and the G7 leaders’ summit in Évian-les-Bains, France.

The strategic result of this tour was a set of comprehensive agreements with European leaders to expand economic and trade ties, along with scientific and technological relations, in order to accelerate supply-chain diversification and reduce dependence on China.

The EU and South Korea also announced their intention to increase defense cooperation, particularly in the defense industry and maritime security.
