Los Angeles Primary: The Influence of Traditional Democratic Party Elites Over Personnel Representation Is Shrinking

On June 8, 2026, the counting of most ballots cast in Los Angeles’ municipal primary election, held on June 2, 2026, was completed. The results confirmed that incumbent Mayor Karen Bass and City Council member Nithya Raman, a progressive candidate, will advance to the runoff election scheduled for November 2026.

Bass, who was endorsed by former Vice President Kamala Harris and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, received 34.3 percent of the vote. Raman, running as a progressive challenger, secured 29 percent. Television personality and Republican candidate Spencer Pratt finished third with 25.5 percent.
