Minneapolis primary results: mainstream elite crisis offers Progressives a chance to transform the Democratic Party

On July 19, 2025, the Democratic Party primary for the mayor of Minneapolis was held, with Minnesota State Senator and progressive Omar Fateh selected as the nominee.

Given that Minneapolis has been led by Democratic politicians for over 40 years, Fateh’s chances of success in the November 2025 mayoral election are significantly increased.

During his campaign, Fateh focused on voter demands, building his electoral strategy around the same issues as New York progressive leader and current Democratic mayoral candidate for that city, Zohran Mamdani.

Key themes in Omar Fateh’s campaign included housing affordability, municipal infrastructure improvements, and education issues. In the Minnesota Senate, Fateh chaired the Higher Education Committee and advocated for free college tuition for members of households earning less than $80,000 annually.
