On December 2, 2025, American President Donald Trump signed a law expanding security guarantees for Taiwan (Taiwan Assurance Implementation Act). According to it, the State Department must conduct an audit of regulations regarding Taiwan no less than once every five years.

This will allow the USA to systematically weaken restrictions on formal interaction with Taipei—including granting Taiwanese officials the right to make official visits to the United States. At the same time, the key criterion for a positive assessment is management based on “free and open elections.”

These legislative changes have become the most tangible gesture of support for Taiwan from the White House since Joe Biden restored official contacts with Taipei for American agencies, in a format that includes restrictions on who, at what level, and how can meet and communicate with Taiwanese officials.
