On May 19, 2026, the U.S. Senate voted 50–47 to advance for consideration a resolution introduced by Democrat Tim Kaine requiring the White House to obtain congressional authorization for any further military action against Iran.

The initiative, supported by an overwhelming majority of Democratic senators, also received backing from four members of the Republican Party. Rand Paul, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski formed a stable core of Republican defectors who had joined Kaine’s previous resolutions during the past three months.

Bill Cassidy joined this group for the first time. The May 19 vote took place three days after his defeat in the Louisiana Republican primary on May 16, 2026, where the two candidates advancing to the runoff — Julia Letlow and John Fleming — had both received Donald Trump’s endorsement.
