Political pressure on Democrats prompts internal consolidation

On June 17, 2025, federal agents detained Brad Lander, a financial official and Democratic candidate for New York City mayor, at an immigration court in Manhattan.

Within hours, thanks to the intervention of New York’s Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, Lander was released from custody, and the charges against him were dropped.

This incident is one example of systemic pressure from law enforcement on Democratic Party representatives following heightened political tensions in the United States due to the White House’s immigration initiatives.

Days before this event, during a briefing by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, California Democratic Senator Alex Padilla was detained, and in May 2025, several progressive politicians, including Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Congresswoman LaMonica McIver, were arrested.
