Sanae Takaichi's Visit to Vietnam: Japanese Capital Integrates Hanoi Into Western High-Technology Cycles

Solid Info
From May 1–3, 2026, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi conducted her first official visit to Vietnam. Following negotiations with President Tô Lâm and Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, the parties agreed to increase bilateral trade turnover to $60 billion by 2030, while Japan declared its readiness to channel $5 billion in annual investment into Vietnam.
Unlike the previous model of engagement with China — under which Western capital entered the country without requirements for strategic alignment and was easily replaced after Beijing altered its economic policy — the United States and its allies are implementing a different model in Vietnam.
Japan, South Korea, India, European states, and the American private sector are simultaneously entering the country with investments, production cycles, and logistics chains designed to attain critical importance for the Vietnamese budget and labor market.
