New York primaries: Progressives rethink political strategy and focus on the socio-economic demands of American society

On June 24, 2025, the Democratic Party primaries for the mayor of New York City took place, with Zohran Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, selected as the nominee.

Although Mamdani will face competition in the November 2025 mayoral election from the incumbent mayor and former New York governor, the Democratic nomination significantly boosts Zohran Mamdani’s chances of success. Over the past three New York City mayoral elections, Democratic Party candidates have consistently won the position of city leader.

The success of a democratic socialist in the primaries, whose candidacy was endorsed by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, demonstrates a resurgence of the electoral strength of progressives, which was partially lost during the 2024 election campaigns.
