From May 23–26, 2026, Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited India, where the chief U.S. diplomat held talks with the country’s Prime Minister and Minister of External Affairs.

The Secretary of State’s trip concluded with a meeting of the foreign ministers of the QUAD member states, during which the parties discussed ways to improve maritime security through the establishment of a maritime surveillance initiative in the Indo-Pacific region, as well as strengthening fuel and energy supply chains.

The signing of an Indo-American agreement on enhanced cooperation in critical minerals during Rubio’s visit demonstrated that he is becoming established within the administration as the official through whom the White House conducts negotiations with the government of a country whose position directly affects security coordination in the Indo-Pacific and the containment of China.
