Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court revealed divisions during hours-long hearings on how lower courts should interpret and address President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at abolishing birthright citizenship (jus soli).

Trump signed this order on his first day in office. According to the order, children born to non-U.S. citizens would not automatically receive American citizenship.

The U.S. Constitution guarantees citizenship to those born in the United States, as stipulated in the 14th Amendment: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”
