On August 27, 2024, China launched the first batch of Thousand Sails Internet satellites, a low-orbit group of more than 15,000 satellites that, according to China, will provide global Internet coverage and compete with SpaceX's Starlink.

China's One Thousand Sails project is a strategic tool for promoting China's version of digital globalization, which is in harmony with China's One Belt, One Road infrastructure initiative.

The introduction of the low-orbit satellite constellation aims to create an alternative Internet infrastructure to Starlink. This infrastructure is intended to allow China to reduce its dependence on Western technologies by creating its own network with global coverage.
