Japan after Ishiba: LDP begins a new electoral cycle aimed at “leveling” its position with Donald Trump

On September 7, 2025, Shigeru Ishiba announced his resignation from the positions of Prime Minister and President of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party of Japan (LDP), emphasizing that he has no intention of running again.

His decision was the result of pressure from LDP Supreme Advisor Taro Aso, who considered Ishiba's premiership a “historical mistake” that led to a partial loss of the party's control over the parliament, complications in relations with the Donald Trump administration, and a slowdown in implementing the “strategic break” course with the PRC.

As a result, the LDP scheduled early elections for party president on October 4, after which the parliament will elect a new Japanese Prime Minister.

Although the previous elections to the lower house took place only on October 27, 2024, the new Prime Minister may announce early parliamentary elections.
