Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government decided to establish the National Critical Minerals Mission (NCMM) on January 29, 2025.

According to it, India will spend about $4 billion to explore mineral resources on its mainland and offshore territories necessary to support high-tech industries, the military-industrial complex, and "green innovations" (solar panels, wind turbines, electric vehicles).

In addition, NCMM will deal with mine buyouts in Latin America and other mineral-rich regions. The strategic goal of this reform was to achieve India's independence in the mineral sector, which is controlled in many areas by China (rare earth elements, graphite) and Russia (aluminum, nickel, titanium).
