On Tuesday, February 13, Democrats regained one seat in the U.S. House of Representatives due to Tom Suozzi's convincing victory in the special election in Long Island County after the resignation of Republican George Santos in December 2023.

Democrat Suozzi's victory returned New York's landmark House district to the Democrats, reducing the GOP's slim majority in the House (219 to 213) and potentially offering a preview of campaign tactics for the 2024 elections at the national level.

According to the New York State Board of Elections, Suozzi won 53.7 percent of the vote, compared to 46 percent for Republican candidate Mazie Pilip.

With all the current congressmen present, the Republicans cannot afford to lose more than two votes if they want to pass the bill with their votes alone. Three seats in the lower house of Congress are still vacant.
