Republican statements and policy moves cement Trump's leading role in the future resolution of the border crisis

On January 30, Republicans at a House Homeland Security Committee meeting supported the impeachment of U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas on two counts.

This process will not lead to the actual removal of Mayorkas from office, as the simple majority in the House of Representatives, which the Republicans have there, will not be enough to achieve the personnel result. The case of Majorcas will not be resolved in the Senate, where the Democrats retain a majority, albeit a small one.

Given that, after the proper completion of the trial in the Senate, removing a minister from office requires a 2/3 vote of the upper house of the US Congress, the removal of Mayorkas looks illusory.

In the short term, the Republicans still have the opportunity to blame the Democratic Party for the inaction that led to the crisis and even find support for this thesis among the general electorate.
