On February 26, 2024, the Philippines announced the opening of an auction for the right to explore natural hydrogen deposits. These fields are concentrated in the westernmost part of Luzon Island and cover an area of 134,096 and 96,439 hectares, respectively.
The Philippines accepts applications for exploration rights until August 27, and the rights to operate will be granted in November 2024. The Philippines’ hydrogen initiative has already attracted the attention of the American company Freedom Solar Group and the Anglo-Spanish pioneer Helios Aragon, which holds licenses for natural hydrogen exploration in Aragon in northeastern Spain.
Under the latest framework partnership between the United States, Japan, and the Philippines, Luzon Island has been identified as a strategic island. The construction of large-scale transportation infrastructure is planned, which, once hydrogen exploration is launched, will allow its successful export by transportation infrastructure.
