U.S. Troop withdrawal from Iraq: Turkey and the Gulf Arab monarchies will support Baghdad’s independent path and balance the influence of the autocratic axis on the country

On September 6, 2024, the United States and Iraq reached an important agreement on the withdrawal of US-led coalition forces from Iraq. According to the plan, all coalition forces will leave the Al-Asad air base in the western province of Anbar and significantly reduce their presence in Baghdad by September 2025.

However, some US troops and other coalition forces will remain in Erbil, in semi-autonomous northern Kurdistan, for another year, until around the end of 2026, to facilitate ongoing operations against the Islamic State in Syria.

Recognizing that a continued large-scale military presence in Iraq is both strategically ineffective and draining on financial and military resources, the United States is looking for a new framework to maintain influence in the country.
