On February 2, 2024, U.S. Ambassador to Norway Mark Nathanson and Norwegian Minister of Defense Bjørn Arild Gram announced the expansion of defense cooperation by amending the Supplemental Defense Cooperation Agreement (SDCA), which declares the intention to establish eight additional agreed facilities and zones in Norway, bringing the total number to twelve.
The new facilities include aviation stations and airfields, a naval station, a garrison, a training ground, training grounds, a cave complex, and a fuel terminal.
Beijing recognizes the Arctic’s strategic importance as a promising trade corridor. Climate change is decreasing sea ice, so the development of new shipping routes could speed up transit between major global markets, making the region a key route for international trade for the foreseeable future.
