The beginning of this year’s negotiation season between the United States and China was marked by significant successes for the Biden administration.

Relying on the agreements reached in San Francisco with Xi Jinping, in January-February 2024, the White House resumed negotiations between the Pentagon and the PLA, expanded channels of communication with Beijing on trade and financial issues (in the face of China’s continued containment campaigns). It secured a position of strength in negotiations with the Communist Party of China over regional conflicts it supports.

The last critical episode in this context was the 12-hour-long talks between National Security Advisor Sullivan and Wang Yi in Bangkok, which took place because of Beijing’s loss of control over the military conflicts in the Middle East.
