Philippines lifts ban on “diplomatic” exchanges with Taiwan: a move to bolster the first island chain and gain Donald Trump’s trust

On April 21, 2025, the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. lifted the 1987 ban on government-to-government exchanges between the Philippines and Taiwan.

From now on, Philippine government officials – with the exception of the President, Vice President, Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defense – will be able to visit Taiwan to deepen bilateral relations.

Also, according to the new rules, the Philippine government will be allowed to receive Taiwanese delegations to develop economic, trade, and investment partnerships.
