Make Japan Great Again: the U.S. foreign policy strategy on Ukraine pushes Japan toward independent global leadership

On February 23, 2025, Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwai said that Japan supports achieving a “lasting and just peace” in Ukraine.

According to the Cabinet’s position, “legitimizing Russian aggression” will have a critical impact on the security of the Indo-Pacific region, provoking, in particular, a Chinese attack on Taiwan.

Japan voted against the US resolution at the UN that equated Ukraine and Russia as “parties to the conflict,” siding with the Philippines, Australia, Canada, and the EU.
