May 23 to 24, 2024, China conducted another large-scale air and naval exercise around Taiwan, aimed at practicing maneuvers before invading the country.
The exercise (codenamed “Joint Sword-2024A”) was the third large-scale “political” military provocation in the Taiwan Strait, taking place against the backdrop of newly elected Taiwanese President William Lai and Vice President Bi-khim Hsiao taking office.
Two others occurred after Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine began, following Speaker Pelosi’s (August 2022) and Speaker McCarthy’s (April 23) visits to Taipei.
