On March 7, 2025, the U.S. government, including the Department of Justice, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Education, and the U.S. General Services Administration, announced the cancellation of $400 million in grants and contracts for Columbia University.
In their joint statement, the government departments indicated that the decision was caused by the university’s inability to control anti-Semitism among the university community.
The federal government has also promised to further reduce subsidies for the institution, which currently receives more than $5 billion in state funding.
