On May 15, 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a ruling by the Supreme Court of Virginia that invalidated the results of the state’s referendum on redistricting.
The position adopted by the majority of justices on Virginia’s highest court — and subsequently supported by the Supreme Court in Washington — restored the 2021 electoral map, under which five of Virginia’s eleven congressional districts retain boundaries favorable to Republican candidates in the midterm elections.
The cancellation of the redistricting amendment, which would have given the Democratic Party the potential to expand its representation in the U.S. House of Representatives by four seats, deprives Democrats of part of the gains they could otherwise have secured in the next Congress.
