From May 3 to 5, 2026, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made her first visit in office to Canberra for talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Following the talks, the two countries agreed to expand their partnership in energy and cybersecurity, and to secure access to critical mine announced their intention to deepen defense cooperation by institutionalizing existing security initiatives. Although they did not disclose specific measures, both Prime Ministers equated the level of Japan-Australia relations with that of an alliance.
Prime Minister Takaichi’s visit to Australia became part of Japan’s campaign to diversify its security partnerships. Holding parallel talks with the governments of Vietnam and Indonesia, Tokyo continues to focus on creating additional instruments for deterring China against the backdrop of the process of removing restrictions on Japan’s military-industrial complex.
