From March 4 to 10, 2024, Beijing hosted the “two sessions,” a political event that occurs every March and aims to create the appearance of democracy.
The “two sessions” involve the convening of simultaneous annual sessions of two bodies: the National People’s Congress (the Chinese parliament) and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (an advisory institution that brings together representatives of the Communist Party, pro-Communist organizations, and representatives of Hong Kong and Macau controlled by the Communist Party).
This year’s “two sessions” were the first after Xi Jinping’s election to a third term and demonstrated the Chinese government’s commitment to continued existence in the face of increasing isolation and external pressure from democratic countries led by the United States.
