On March 17, the government of Niger announced the immediate termination of its military cooperation agreement with the United States. This comes as the Sahelian leaders are forging closer ties with Russia and Iran after coming to power in a military coup.
The decision to denounce Niger’s military cooperation with the United States was made after Prime Minister Lamine Zain visited Russia, Serbia, Turkey, and Iran in early 2024. This allowed the Nigerian authorities to improve their reputation among other major West African countries, including Mali and Burkina Faso.
West African countries are increasingly reorienting themselves toward cooperation with countries on the autocratic axis.
