In April 2024, the US tech giant Microsoft signed a framework agreement with clean energy platform Brookfield Renewable to develop more than 10.5 GW of new clean energy capacity in the US and Europe.
With the assistance of the Canadian investment management company Brookfield Asset Management, Microsoft will gain access to renewable energy capacity to support the growing demand for cloud services. By 2030, Microsoft plans to switch to 100% carbon-free energy in its buildings, services, and data centers.
The framework agreement with Microsoft incentivizes Brookfield Asset Management to create a large portfolio of new renewable energy projects in the United States, Europe, Asia-Pacific, India, and Latin America.
