The European Parliament election results demonstrated EU’s political adjustments ahead of global conflict

On June 6-9, 2024, elections to the EU’s leading legislative institution, the European Parliament, took place. The center-right European People’s Party, headed by Ursula von der Leyen, won 185 seats. The Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) is in second place with 137 seats. The third place goes to the liberal association Renew Europe (79 seats).

The EU political establishment calculated the trend toward the strengthening of right-wing and far-right parties following the European Parliament elections long before the elections.

The realization that China and Russia would use political counter-religions in European countries to exploit the strategic vulnerability of democratic countries, undermining the unity of the EU and the transatlantic alliance, forced the leaders of the US European allies to act proactively.
