India and Japan’s collaboration on creating alternative cobalt and nickel supply chains bolsters US ‘lattice’ security system

During a study from April to June 2024, Japan discovered significant deposits of rare earth metals near Minami-Torishima Island in its exclusive economic zone.

The Nippon Foundation and the University of Tokyo estimate that the discovered reserves will be enough for 75 years of cobalt consumption in Japan and approximately 11 years of nickel consumption.

The 10,000-square-meter area contains 610,000 tons of cobalt and 740,000 tons of nickel. The research team plans to start trial production in 2025, extracting manganese compounds containing cobalt and nickel to meet the daily needs of steel mills in Japan.
