On July 29, the White House announced that the Korean company HD-Hyundai will participate in the US Navy’s shipbuilding program, which will include a new educational partnership with the University of Michigan and Seoul.
The latter will include an exchange program in shipbuilding that will allow US civilian and naval engineers to study Korean HD Hyundai vessels.
The Presidential Administration’s moves are a response to the March calls by five American labor unions to strengthen U.S. capabilities in the shipbuilding sector, which China’s non-competitive subsidy practices have weakened.
