On July 29, Venezuela held early presidential elections, which resulted in Maduro’s victory with 51 percent of the vote. Maduro violated the compromise agreements between Venezuela and the United States, which involved the opposition.
In preparation for the election, the Maduro regime disqualified the most prominent opposition figures, forcing them to choose as their only candidate the unpopular and uncharismatic 74-year-old Edmundo Gonzalez.
As of August 2, 2024, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken claims that there is strong evidence in favor of the legitimate victory of the opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez.
