The United States unprecedentedly expands military support to Taiwan by integrating into NATO and East Asian security systems

On September 30, 2024, the Biden administration announced the largest defense assistance package to Taiwan in U.S. history, $567 million, through the PDA mechanism.

It complemented Joe Biden’s decision last year to allocate $345 million for Taiwan’s defense needs. The current allocation will replenish weapons stockpiles, conduct military exercises, strengthen Taiwan’s air defense, and jointly produce drones.

It is expected that the White House will provide a third package of relevant assistance before the new president’s inauguration to prevent a possible Chinese attack on Taiwan.
