Implications of the vice-presidential debates in New York: amid Republican electoral success among ‘blue-collar’ workers, Democrats find economic incentives to attract labor support

On October 1, 2024, the CBS Television Center in New York hosted a debate between US Vice Presidential candidates J.D. Vance and Tim Walz, which, according to Nielsen Media Research, attracted more than 43 million viewers.

According to a CBS News poll, 42% of viewers believed that J.D. Vance won the debate, while 41% of respondents preferred Tim Walz.

Both Tim Walz and J.D. Vance increased their awareness and improved their perception of themselves among voters — after the debate, Walz’s positive perception increased from 52% to 60%, and Vance’s from 40% to 49%.
