Prabowo Subianto’s presidency in Indonesia: autocratic balancing between the U.S. and China threatens American economic security

On October 20, 2024, the inauguration ceremony of the new Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto (74) and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka (37) occurred in Jakarta. They became the oldest and the youngest elected to their positions following the February 14 elections.

Thus, under the presidential republic system, Prabowo Subianto announced the composition of his government, which included 48 ministers, 58 deputy ministers, the head of the presidential administration, and the attorney general — the largest number of top officials since 1966.

Some had been part of the Joko Widodo government, confirming the consensus between the power groups close to the current and previous presidents.
