In early January 2025, the newly elected US President Donald Trump made several statements regarding the United States’ claims to Greenland, an autonomous North American state within Denmark, formally seeking independence in February 2024.
As a result, his son Donald Trump Jr. paid a visit to the Greenlandic capital of Nuuk, after which the future US leader said that “a deal (on Greenland) has to happen.”
Donald Trump’s Greenland initiative is part of his broader strategy to ensure American dominance in the Arctic, the only region bordering the United States where the US military is critically inferior to the alliance between China and Russia.
