Meta’s Waterworth project aims for leadership with next-generation technological infrastructure.

On February 14, the American company Meta announced the Waterworth project, which aims to lay 50,000 km of undersea internet cables, a circumference larger than the Earth’s equator.

The new project, which will reach five continents and provide large-scale AI connectivity, will run through the United States, India, Brazil, South Africa, and other key regions for Washington. It will promote greater economic cooperation and digital engagement for the technological development of these regions.

The Meta project was a logical continuation of AI development in the United States after the Stargate project and paved the way for Donald Trump to sign the American Investment Protection Act on February 26, 2025. The act provides for the possibility of imposing increased tariffs on countries where American technology companies are “under pressure.”
