On March 17, 2025, Japan and the European Union intended to hold the first-ever joint security event in Southeast Asia to collectively deter China. This is a two-day seminar in Bangkok for representatives of the coast guard forces of five ASEAN member states, including Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
The subject of the exercise will be responding to China’s hybrid provocations that do not fall under the classical definition of an armed attack: the use of “civilian” equipment for acts of aggression, air blockades, and cutting of submarine cables.
The event program will analyze the precedents set by China and Russia in Japanese waters, the West Philippine Sea, the Taiwan Strait, and the Baltic Sea.
